How to Change a Drive Letter in Windows

Many a times we are not comfortable with using odd letters as drive letters. But thankfully, Windows provides you with a simple way to change them to your desired letter provided they are free. You will be able to accomplish the task in a matter of few steps mentioned below.

Step 1 : Open Disk Management

You first need to open disk management. Right click on My Computer and select Manage option. In the following windows, in the left pane you would find the Disk Management option.

Step 2 : Select drive you want to change letter

Next, after having opened the Disk Management panel, select the drive you wish to change the drive letter for. Right click the drive and you will find an option “Change drive letters and path” listed there. Select it and proceed to next step.

Step 3 : Change the drive letter

In the small window that opens up after the last step, you will find the drive you selected listed there. Select the drive and click on the change button. In the “Assign the following drive letter”, select the drive letter you wish to have for the drive from the drop down box and click OK.

It will give you a warning, ignore it and click Yes. You are done! You have successfully changed the drive letter.

Caution : Make sure the drive that you are changing the drive letter for does not have files associated with other drive. For example it does not contain Program Files or other files associated with programs. Changing drive letter of these drives can cause programs to not work.
